What is Sigma Kappa Delta?

  • “Sigma Kappa Delta was formed under the auspices of Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society serving four-year institutions. Sigma Kappa Delta was created April 21, 1996, in Chicago, Illinois. The organization was incorporated in 1996 in the state of Missouri as a not-for-profit educational entity.
  • Its central purpose is to confer distinction upon outstanding students of the English language and literature in undergraduate studies. Sigma Kappa Delta also recognizes the accomplishments of professional writers who have contributed to the fields of language and literature.
  • The name Sigma Kappa Delta comes from the Greek letters representing the first letter of each of the words that form the official motto, “Sincerity, Knowledge, and Design”: ΣΚΔ.
  • The official colors of the Society are green and gold; the official plant is English Ivy
  • Through the work of chapters on the campuses of two-year institutions throughout the United States, Sigma Kappa Delta provides exceptional students opportunities for advancing the study of language and literature, for developing skills in creative and analytical writing, and for meeting other outstanding scholars and professionals in the discipline of English” (SKD Handbook).
  • Lambda Gamma of NWACC is one of  ninety-four chapters in the United States.
